I love the wall that runs down the side of this block of flats in Ballarat. The three storey block is cut into a hill so the wall which runs alongside the footpath needs to step down from the back of the property to the street running along the front.
Otherwise the building is symetrical around a central tower topped with a flagpole. Each flat at the front has a small rounded balcony.
It's a shame the flat at the bottom right has installed a shutter which is completely out of character with the rest of the building.
Any idea why there's a flagpole on the building?
ReplyDeleteNo idea Adam. I presume it is just part of the art deco styling.
ReplyDeleteThere is a very stylish deco flats block on the corner of Webster and Drummond streets Ballarat.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann
ReplyDeleteAnother one to add to my list to check out.
That street is Albert Street in Ballarat central, and only a few doors away, on it's corner with Sturt Street, there is a huge deco palace which may have been a chemist originally.
ReplyDeleteYou may have missed it because the street level has been mucked, but the upper part has impressive deco elements.
And since Ann O'Dyne mentioned above, the deco HOUSE on the corner of Webster and Drummond Streets Ballarat, it has been sympathetically restored by a loving owner. very slowly too.
If you visit her blog and look for the post Regional Art Deco, you will see an amazing shop on Ballarat's old main street (now a mall).
Thanks for the addition information. I've been to the Davies shop in the Mall but I don't recall the possible former chemist and I still haven't been back to Ballarat to have a look at the deco house. So glad to hear that it is being properly restored and looked after.
