This is the Prefcor Building in downtown Durban.
The bulding was originally Payne Bros Department Store. The Facts About Durban website says that when the store opened in 1938 it had the longest escalator in the Southern Hemisphere and local children used to visit the store just to ride on it.
This is great and your blog is great David. I love art deco buildings. Made a special trip to Napier, whilst in New Zealand recently, just to check out all their fantastic architecture.

Thanks J Bar. Your blog looks fantastic and I'm glad you made it to Napier on your recent NZ trip.
ReplyDeleteI spent an entire long day being toured around Durban by a local person while on a cruise 5 years ago. I was dazzled, and saw everything from the substantial old government buildings to the large area of makeshift dwellings just outside of the city. Of course I noted the wonderful Art Deco examples in Durban as well. Your photos here are superb David, and I will be looking in again. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comments. Durban is great city, I too enjoyed my visit there.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteI worked for Payne Bros 1970 I was their Receptionist and at lunch time modelled Payne
Bros garments while people were having lunch. I also worked in their Mail Order Dept where people wrote in and I would go around to the different depts and choose whatever they required and then rail their goods to them
Regards
Jenny Hayward
Thanks Jenny,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful concept that you would model Payne Bros garments at lunch time.
