Kaniva is by my reckoning, in the middle of nowhere.
On the Western Highway between Nhill and the South Australian border, it does boast the Commercial Hotel, quite a substantial pub.
I reckon it pre-dates the Art Deco period but I do love this doorway.
Now THAT'S a pub.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine it humming on a Saturday night?
ReplyDeleteIt looks solid and heavy, doesn't it? Not like some rural pubs of that era that had refined open balconies, fine pillars and shaded footpaths. Perhaps the original owners had planted themselves in Kaniva and were never going to be moved.
ReplyDeleteVery solid indeed Helen, you could be on to something there!
ReplyDeleteBuilt in 1937 by a local gentleman who was one of the last Sailing Clipper Captains. The freehold is for sale!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. Anyone want to buy a pub?
