This is Olympus, an Art Deco apartment block in Oriental Bay.
The entrance is in the side street, away from the bay. I suspect this is a nice feature when Wellington's notorious winds are blowing straight off the sea.
Placing the doorway away from the seafront allows the views across the bay to be maximised.
Not only is the entrance out of the wind, but there are no porches jutting out in front of each flat. Rather lovely, actually... very streamline.
ReplyDeleteYes I noted the flatness of the seaward side. Possibly this may have been to maximise the floor space of the apartments on the wedge-shaped block but also, if the prevailing wind was against this side and presumably cold coming off the see rather than cooling then it may have been a waste to create open balconies. In any case I agree, it is a rather lovely effect.
