A House in Woodville

A House in Woodville

It seems to me that this is a typical New Zealand Art Deco house. You seem them all over the place. This one is in Woodville on the North Island and is perhaps more decorated than a lot of others. Although it does look like they ran out of paint (motivation) to finish the speed line on the curved section of the house.

Wairarapa Times-Age Building, Masterton

Wairarapa Times-Age Building, Masterton

In 1938, two newspapers serving the Wairarapa district on the North Island of New Zealand, the Wairarapa Daily Times and the Wairarapa Age merged and moved into this Art Deco building in Masterton. The newspaper is still there but in December last year, the Times-Age reported that local developer Dave Borman had bought the building planning to return it to its 'former glory'. The Wairarapa Times-Age will remain as the anchor tenant.

Carrigafoyle Flats, Wellington

Carrigafoyle, Wellington

A google search of Carrigafoyle, Wellington will produce information on an historic house from the early 20th century designed by Plenty & Blake. These flats bearing the same name are next door.

Historic Hydro Motor Inn, Leeton

Hydro Motor Inn, Leeton

Greetings if you are in Leeton (or on your way there) for their second Art Deco festival. Perhaps your are staying in in Historic Hydro Motor Inn in Chelmsford Place, right in the centre of town. The "Hydro Accommodation House", designed by the Department of Works, was opened in August 1919 and its design reflects this immediate post-war period rather than a more Deco style. Even if you're not staying there, make sure you pop in and have a look around, especially the stained glass window on the second floor.

Streatham Ice Arena

Streatham Ice Arena

I took this photo of the Streatham Ice Arena around 2000. It opened in 1931 and closed on December 16 2011 and has since been demolished to make way for a supermarket development.

Petain Apartments, Shanghai

Apartments, Shanghai

Is it wrong to hate trees? Of course it is, but gee, they get in the way of my photos sometimes. Anyway there are some close up views below of the decoration on these apartments in Shanghai.

Update:
Checking through my Shanghai notes I've worked out that these apartments are called Petain and were built in 1934.

Denis Apartments, Shanghai

Denis Apartments, Shanghai

This is an apartment block with the somewhat unusual name of Denis, unusual for a block of flats anyway. They are located in West Nanjing Road in Shanghai. They were designed by Eric Cumine and built in 1928.
