The Adelaide Chapter of the Art Deco Society are making a last ditch effort to save the former Wallis Cinema in Glenelg.
As reported in the Guardian Newspaper today, they have already collected over 1100 signatures and are trying to have the building listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.
Convenor of the Adelaide Chapter, David O'Loughlin, says the cinema is incorrectly recorded as being built in 1956 in a Holdfast Bay Council heritage review undermining the historical importance of the building. The cinema was actually designed in 1936 by F Kenneth Milne.

shame, developers, shame!
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of fail!
ReplyDeleteHow can they get their facts wrong and refuse to be corrected?
Thanks Helen, too often demolition is the starting point for redevelopment rather than looking at adaptive re-use.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I suspect the mistake has been acknowledged (and possibly since corrected) by Holdfast Council. Their CEO is quoted in the newspaper article saying the Council would like to see the cinema reopened but other than rejecting two sets of the developer's plans there is litle evidence they are doing much else. The article doesn't say why the plans were rejected and Wallis are appealing the decision at the Environment, Resource & Development Court in September which may allow the demolition to proceed.
