Formerly Wakefield House, it was designed by architects Crane & Scott and built in 1939 for Castrol Australia.
In the mid 1960s it became Festival Records Recording Studio 'A'. Australian artists Kylie Minogue, Yothu Yindi, Cold Chisel & Peter Allen recorded in this building which was also used by international artists such as Bob Dylan, Neil Sedaka, Tom Petty, Julio Iglesias & Stevie Nicks.
The building is heritage listed and was remodelled for mixed commercial use several years ago.

DeleteSherbet also recorded there. Johnny O'Keefe movie was recorded out the front with a pink goat. I worked there. Fantastic times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteInteresting view. Whose responsibility is it to recognise/preserve the building's past. It is Heritage Listed so the in that sense the Government and its agencies have done the right thing. Are you suggesting they should have purchased the property and set it up as a museum? Shouldn't they do that for all Heritage Listed buildings then? What responsibility do Festival Records have for preserving their own history? I'd suggest that it is typical of all cities that buildings outlive their original purpose and get adapted for a different purpose. It is a good thing.
