They really have done a great job restoring the main auditorium at The Senator Theatre, Baltimore. The original metre tall sconces along the wall were trashed but even those have returned in the form of modern replicas.
Looks like they've gone to a lot of effort and no doubt the results are worth it. The people of Baltimore really need to get out and watch movies here. So much better than the same old, same old multiplex at a shopping mall.
MELBOURNE ART DECO
In 2009 Robin Grow published a book on Melbourne Art Deco, with images largely supplied by David Thompson. The book quickly sold out and he is pleased to say that it has now been re-published by Brolga Press, with updates, errors corrected and a new cover.
Best of all, it is selling for about $25 in the shops and on-line. Art Deco & Modernism Society members can purchase a copy from me for $22, (includes postage within Australia). For overseas orders please email for postage rates. Contact me at robingrow@ozemail.com.au if you are interested, and advise if you would like the book to be dedicated and/or signed.
Those blue and orange racing stripes along the side walls are sleek, very Deco and appealing.
ReplyDeleteBut there is a lot of pink. Do the records remain from the original Senator Theatre, suggesting whether pink was popular back then or not?
I've seen many pink and black domestic bathrooms but they might be from a slightly later period.
DeleteYou correctly said it was quite a building. It's a brave use of colour at times, but it works very well.
ReplyDeleteJust about to post the last set of pics Andrew. The foyer is pretty spectacular too.
DeleteSpectacular! I will have to see this theatre on a trip to Baltimore. The color scheme is so vibrant!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly will Susan. It's just been re-opened a couple of months so everything is looking really great.
DeleteFrom what I read about the restoration they studied the old paint layers to recreate it. Kara
