During the 11th World Congress on Art Deco in Rio de Janeiro many of our bus trips went through the Engineer Coelho Cintra tunnel that links Copacabana and Botafogo. Each time we would see a lovely deco church at the Botafogo end and then one day the bus was caught in traffic and I was able to snap this picture.
From what I can see it is called the Igreja de Santa Teresinha do Túnel Novo or the church of Little St Thresea of the New Tunnel.

This is a very unusual building, for a church or for some other function. Have you seen anything like this before? What was the new tunnel about?
ReplyDeleteThere aren't that many churches around with such obvious Art Deco stepping as this one. The Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik is probably the best one I've seen.
DeleteI think the Brazilians dedicated Saint Theresa to the success of the road tunnel.
I know you have a number of posts about Rio de Janeiro but have you had a look at the Christ the Redeemer statue? Thanks for the link,

It is an amazing statue Helen and definitely Art Deco. It is just as interesting close up when you can see the individual soapstone pieces.
