Estádio da Gávea, Flamengo

Estádio da Gávea, Flamengo

This is the Estádio José Bastos Padilha, nominally the home of the Flamengo Football Club, also known as the Estádio da Gávea. Flamengo play their home matches at the much larger Estádio do Maracanã leaving the 1938 Estádio da Gávea as their training ground.

Casa Monteiro de Carvalho, Santa Teresa

Casa Monteiro de Carvalho, Santa Teresa

On Wednesday I showed you the dining room and winter garden at the Casa Monteiro de Carvalho in Santa Teresa. So today I wanted to show you the spectacular Lalique table that greets visitors through the front entrance.

Casa Monteiro de Carvalho, Santa Teresa

Sala de Jantar da Casa Monteiro de Carvalho

This is the sala de jantar (dining room) in the casa Monteiro de Carvalho, a house of extraordinary Deco treasures at Santa Teresa near Rio de Janeiro.

Sala de Jantar da Casa Monteiro de Carvalho

Take a look at the light over the dining table. Probably Lalique, a lot of the lights in the house were.

At the end of the room behind a wrought iron screen by Edgar Brandt, the master French iron worker of the Deco period, is the jardim de inverno (winter garden).

With lots of great Deco furniture and fantastic leadlight windows.

Apartments, Belo Horizonte

Apartments, Belo Horizonte

OK. These apartments in Belo Horizonte are not deco, in fact, I presume they aren't even 40 years old but I love the small windows lining the corner.

Apartments, Belo Horizonte

I say they are probably not even 40 years old because there is a concrete mural at street level by Maia Borkowski dated 1980. I assume it was done around the same time the apartments were built.

Edíficio Itaoca, Copacabana

Edíficio Itaoca, Copacabana

Copacabana has a lot of deco apartment buildings and this is one is quite special. Edíficio Itaoca dates from 1928 and was designed by architects Anton Floderer and Robert Prentice.

Edíficio Itaoca, Copacabana

The decoration includes indigenous Brazilian motifs marking Itaoca as one of the best examples of Art Deco Carioca or Rio Art deco.

Edíficio Itaoca, Copacabana

The main entrance is stunning, surrounded as it is with green tiles.

Edíficio Itaoca, Copacabana

I love it.

A Skyscraper in São Paulo

Skyscraper, São Paulo

This shot captures my memories of the area around Rua Quinze de Novembro in São Paulo. I reckon the skyscraper is probably post-WWII but it still has something about it.

Staircase, Urca

Staircase, Urca

If you've been paying attention you will remember I posted some photos of an amazing bathroom in a house in the Rio suburb of Urca. I also posted some pics of the front door with figures of a hunter and a gazelle incorporated into the metal work. This is the staircase that greets you once you get inside that front door.

Casa do Baile, Pampulha

Casa do Baile, Pampulha

In the 1940s, Oscar Niemeyer designed a number of modernist buildings on the shores of an artificial lake at Pampulha, part of the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

Casa do Baile, Pampulha

I already posted pictures of the Igreja de São Francisco de Assis and this is the Casa do Baile, originally a casino, which was built in the same year as the church, 1943.

Casa do Baile, Pampulha

The building is circular with this curving covered walkway along the side of the lake.

Casa do Baile, Pampulha

Inside on the wall there are some Niemeyer drawings and a quote linking the development at Pampulha in the 1940s to Niemeyer's development of Brasilia in the 1960s.

Niemeyer's quote, translated from Portuguese, goes something like this …

Pampulha was the beginning of Brasilia.
The same problems, the same rush, the same enthusiasm.
And its success influenced, with certainty, in the determination with which JK* constructed the new capital.

*JK - Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, Mayor of Belo Horizonte in the 1940s and then President of Brazil when Brasilia was developed in the 1950s and 60s.
