A stunning Art Deco house on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell. The owner was doing some work in her garden and allowed me to step over the low wall and take some clearer photos.

Letterbox, Golf Links Estate, Camberwell

It is very common to see, around Melbourne, the slot of a letterbox worked into the bricks of the the gatepost or wall of the average suburban house. However I have never seen another one shaped like an arrow as this one on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell is.

The Golf Links estate in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell offers a wonderful variety of interwar house designs. I've written about several Golf Link houses previously and this is another example.

The main design feature are the crazy brick patterns arranged in large semi-circular panels above each of the ground floor windows but I think the most interesting aspect of the decoration is the arrangements of bricks on the gable end of the house.

This house is on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell, Melbourne. It has an interesting double porch and balcony arrangement at the front door.

Here's another house from the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell. I love the decorative brickwork on this house. In particular around the arched entrance, on the eaves and, as you can see below, on the chimney.

I've previously written several posts about the Golf Links Estate in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell. The estate, as you may have guessed, is a wonderful pocket of interwar houses on a former golf course.

This house shows a great use of bricks as highlights and decoration. Look at the detail in the chimney and the keystone effects around the arched entrance. The eaves, both at the main roof and the small porch roof, are decorated with bricks and there are several rows of small bricks below the windows.

The low rendered wall has a healthy foundation of bricks and finally there is that feature decoration above the window.

This is an interesting house on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell, Melbourne.

The first aspect that attracts my attention is the rounded stepping wall at the porch entrance. Then there is the arrangement of the windows with the 'barley twist' columns and the fanlight above the central panes.

Notice also the decorative brickwork. The stepped sets of bricks at the bottom corners of the windows, each holding up a column. The quoining, illustrated best on the right hand corner of the house and the horizontal band of bricks across the gable.

Another nice feature is the L-shaped planter at the porch entrance. Besides being a decorative feature it acts as a guide and a barrier, keeping visitors to the path leading to the front door.

This is another house on the Golf Links Estate in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell.

The house has interesting highlights in red brick against the mainly white building. The garden is arranged on several tiers with 'crazy paving' retaning walls and the letterbox looks like it could be at home in any English country lane.

The view along the side of the house reveals the original concrete driveway leading to the portico. The driveway have originally had grass between the two concrete tracks but has been infilled with more 'crazy paving'.

A peep at the back of the house revealed a lovely little garage but I couldn't see how they could get a car to it with some new gates behind the portico.

Rosglen, Camberwell

Each time I've written a post about the houses on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell it has received a fantastic reaction, so here's another one.

This is Rosglen. It has lovely detail in the cream brick wall and dark capping and highlights. Even the house number, forty-three, has been incorporated into the metalwork of the gate.

For me through, the outstanding feature of this house are the chimneys.

I like the way a single decorative elements is used to tie together the different areas of this house in the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell.

In this view you can see the design used for the gate posts is repeated on the front of the house on the centre of the porch. It is also on the front of the garage at the end of the driveway.

Below is a view showing the element is also used in the centre of the low front wall and the interesting feature of the Golf Links Estate where a flowerbed has been created on the outside of the wall.

The split-level lawn area is also common in gardens of this period.

This house is on a large corner block on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell. The property is surrounded by a low wall with regularly spaced piers topped with a simple stepped geometric form.

This house also demostrates an interesting feature of the Golf Links Estate with a narrow flowerbed between the wall and the footpath bringing the private garden outside the property to the public space. In some streets this etra garden space is well used while in others it is a bit hit and miss with some owners extending the width of the footpath to fill-in the flowerbed.

The house itself is rendered and painted in a cream colour with decoration provided through the use dark bricks in irregular patterns on the corners of the building and around the front entrance.

I adore the front of this house in Camberwell. I don't know if it is a deep verandah or an enormous porch behind that complete semi-circular arch.

On a hot November Saturday in Melbourne I look at this house and wonder if it is cool in there.

Agra, Camberwell

This is an interesting residence called Agra on the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell. I especially like the quarter-circle balcony and the stepped brick supports and simple metal ballustrade on the other small balcony.

Traffic Islands, Golf Links Estate, Camberwell

The Golf Links Estate in Camberwell is a wonderful collection of interwar houses but when I visited a week or so ago I was taken by the these small traffic islands.

I saw two and as you can see they are triangular in shape with a round light on a concrete support in the middle of the island.

The streets in the estate are quite narrow by today's standards and it is good to see that the traffic islands have survived where surely there would have been pressure to shrink them to aid the flow of cars through the intersection.

Woodside, Camberwell

As the name suggests, the Golf Links Estate in Camberwell was built on a former golf course and is considered one of the best interwar suburbs in Melbourne.

This is Woodside with its name worked into the ironwork of the gate. A concrete path leads past a garden light to the front door, well protected by a substantial porch.

The front garden is surrounded by a short cream coloured wall supported on a base of dark bricks and capped with a strip of brown. The step-down of the wall mirroring the split level of the enclosed garden.
