Kent Hotel, Miami

A great block of Art Deco hotels in Collins Avenue, Miami South Beach. I'll post some pictures of Palmer House and the Tudor in the coming days but today here's the Kent Hotel.

Crescent Hotel, Miami

The Crescent Hotel on in Miami South Beach. Another masterpiece by Henry Hohauser built in 1938. And like all the hotels along Ocean Drive looks even better at night.

Firestone Service Station, Miami

I really like the amazing series of cantilevered canopies on this Firestone Service Station in Miami. Funtionally, only one is required I think all four look sensational.

Temple Emanu-El, Miami

This is the Temple Emanu-El, the synagogue for Miami South Beach. It dates from 1947 and was designed by Albert Anis & Charles Greco.

Delano Hotel, Miami

This photo shows the Ritz Plaza Hotel (L Murray Dixon, 1940), on the left, and the Delano Hotel (Robert Swartburg, 1947) at Miami South Beach.

I find the façade of the Delano interesting with the angles of the walls providing corner windows to maximise the views from all rooms. From a purely decorative perspective through, the tower with its soaring wings are the stand-out feature of the hotel.

Beach Patrol Headquarters, Miami

An iconic deco styled building in that most iconic of deco towns, Miami.

Apartments, Euclid Avenue, Miami

We are so used to seeing pastel colours in Miami South Beach that it is nice to see some a primary colour. On this apartment building in Euclid Avenue it is a red roofline, framing around the windows and the entrance.

I think the red colour fits very well with this particular building because it is different in style to many Miami buildings. Simplier and modernist in style with a large expanse of raw brick.

And next door for comparison we have a more typical Miami apartment block painted in typical Miami shades.

The Carlyle is a classic Miami Art Deco hotel from 1939 designed by Kiehnel & Elliott.

Essex House, Miami

Essex House Hotel in Miami South Beach was designed by Henry Hohauser and built in 1938.

This hotel has all the deco elements. Porthole windows along the top storey. Eyebrows proving shade for the windows on the lower storeys. A rounded corner with the hotel name in neon. Another neon sign along the side of the building and of course on the tower.

A little Miami beauty.

Evelyn, Miami

When I was in Miami in 2005 not everything was perfect and well maintained. A lot was, but I wonder what has happened to Evelyn in the past five years?

Beach Plaza Hotel, Miami

The Beach Plaza Hotel at the corner of 14th Street and Collins Avenue in Miami South Beach was designed by L Murray Dixon in 1935.

The design is quite simple with little decoration. The windows are set back between flat bulky columns and each space has a panel, just below the roofline, with a pattern made up of squares and rectangles.

The corner column bears the Beach Plaza Hotel name and a tower on the roof draws further attention to the hotel.

Like many South Beach hotels, the exterior is illuminated with strips of neon giving a completely different look after dark.

Hotel Clifton, Miami

The Hotel Clifton in Miami South Beach has a very simple streamline facade with virually no decoration.

In fact, there are only two concrete shelves above the ground floor and second storey windows and that is about it.
