While exploring Hell's Kitchen in NYC, I saw the rooline of this building, over a wall, from about a block away so I had to investigate. The building turned out to be a Firehouse, Engine 34 and Hook & Ladder 21.
A brass plaque on the wall between the doors dates the building to 1937 and lists the men in cahrge of the city and the Fire Department at that time.
Fiorello H LaGuardia - Mayor
John J McElligott - Fire Chief & Commissioner
Francis X Giaccone - Deputy Fire Commissioner
Hubert J Treacy - Bureau of Fire Department Buildings

Hubert John Treacy, Sr., was in charge of the Bureau of Fire Department Buildings in all of the New York City boroughs. He was my great-uncle. At Bert's death in 1938, my grandfather James Thomas Treacy succeeded him in that position. James was an architect and he designed at least 12 New York City firehouses, all of which are New York City landmarks and continue to be operating firehouses today.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that information Hugh. It is always great to hear from people who know the history and have a long standing family connection with the buildings I feature.
