Freemasons Hospital, East Melbourne

I love the Miami feel of this photo but it is actually the stairs at the side of the Freemasons Hospital in East Melbourne. The hospital was designed by Stephenson & Meldrum and built by J R & E Seccull in 1936-37 for the United Grand Lodge of Victoria.

    It is a fantastic photo. My mother had surgery there. We opened the very large window and stepped out through it onto the balcony for a breath of air.

    It actually looks like a beachy hotel. Perhaps the goal was to get the hospital patients out of their beds and into the sunshine and fresh air on the balconies.

    The Freemasons hospital definitely nails the gran ocean liner look.
    There's a bunch of beautiful art deco around the East Melbourne/Richmond area, especially apartments.

    I love the stairwell entrance on the side of this building, the glass block lights that lead your eye up are amazing, as is this external staircase. Similar external staircase was in the old Launceston hospital, but was demolished.

    Impressive photograph highlighting the stairwell.
    At the Melbourne Festival of Ideas, the guest speaker from New York spoke about how they are bringing staircases back - from the back to greater prominence in buildings - as a means of encouraging more physical activity in the built environment.

    Actually this stair was built as part of the extension of the building in perfectly matching style to Albert Street. YOu simply cant tell it was extended, and they obviously wanted this stair to match too.
