My fear is that governments MAY be prepared to save the Deco facades of important buildings, but that they probably let developers do anything they like to the interiors. Yet.. yet the public spaces in the Peace Hotel in Shanghai still look very impressive. Thank you.
Now I am interested in the French Concession in Shanghai, I must have a better look at The Peace Hotel. I don't think I would have known about it, without your blog.
MELBOURNE ART DECO
In 2009 Robin Grow published a book on Melbourne Art Deco, with images largely supplied by David Thompson. The book quickly sold out and he is pleased to say that it has now been re-published by Brolga Press, with updates, errors corrected and a new cover.
Best of all, it is selling for about $25 in the shops and on-line. Art Deco & Modernism Society members can purchase a copy from me for $22, (includes postage within Australia). For overseas orders please email for postage rates. Contact me at robingrow@ozemail.com.au if you are interested, and advise if you would like the book to be dedicated and/or signed.

ReplyDeleteThe Peace Hotel is a great example as is the internal spaces in Grosvenor House in the French Concession which is now part of the Jin Jiang hotel.

DeleteThank you.
I haven't been into many of the buildings on the Bund but they all look great from the outside so hopefully they are good inside too.
DeleteA good choice of stairway carpet.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the rug under the table.
DeleteIndeed the rug under the table. It is quite unusual, well I haven't seen one like that before. Very nice.
