    The doors have very complex and rather gorgeous designs, suggesting that whoever built these buildings wanted at least some splendid decoration on their facades,

      Some of the doors are on fabulously decorated buildings but some as you rightly surmise are on relatively plain buildings and the door is the only place where they 'show off',
