Maison J Donat Langelier, Outremont

Maison J Donat Langelier

This fine house, the Maison J Donat Langelier from 1931, was designed by Henri S Labelle.

J Donat Langelier was in the piano business joining with the Pratte Piano Co in 1926.

The house has a wonderful entrance. The door has a very simple, yet very stylish design. The rectangular panel in the bottom section of the door is repeated in the metal railings. The design is also echoed in the window grills beside the green columns on either side of the door.

The decorative arrangements around the entrance are topped by a frieze of a female figure playing a lyre.

  1. That is my favorite thus far.

I don't know if it still exists, but there is (or was) an elevator inside that house, from the basement to the 3rd floor. I believe to be the first private home to have one in Canada.

  3. Thank for the info Francois. I didn't get to see inside but it would be interesting to know if the lift was still there.

  4. What wonderful shots of the Langelier home! As an added note of interest, the freize of the female over the doorway was sculpted by Canadian Artist/Sculptor Joseph Guardo in 1931. The historical documents we still have include several rare photos from 1931 showing the actual completed work, as well one with Joseph Guardo standing beside the Panel.

    1. Thanks for filling some of the gaps. It is lovely to hear that the family have kept archive of Joseph Guardo's work.
