The Gledden Building, on the corner of Hay & William Sts in Perth, was named in honour of Robert Gledden, mining surveyor and benefactor to the University of Western Australia, who continue to own the building.
It was designed by architect Harold Boas and constructed in 1937-38, ten years after Gledden's death. The foyer includes a mailbox that, while plain by American standards, is relatively rare in Australia.Elsewhere the foyer is decorated with indigenous flora and fauna.

wow, that's a stunning find! I really like the detailing in this building. Reminds me of the T&G Buildings around Australia.
ReplyDeleteYou are right Thomas. The tower does give it that T&G feeling.
ReplyDeletethanks for the comment on my blog. Wish I had found your blog before I had to write my essay on Art Deco.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Lesley.
ReplyDeleteI've always found with comedy and assignments ... timing is everything.
Is it true that The Gledden Building is Perth's only surviving inter-war art deco office building? Thankfully it is heritage-listed.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Boas design is actually the Edith Cowan Memorial Clock - I love the deco design and I love the beautiful garden surroundings. But mainly because Edith Cowan was such an early worker for the women's movement :)
Hels, it is a very bold statement for them to say that the Gledden Building 'is the sole example of a Inter-War Art Deco high rise office
ReplyDeletebuilding in Perth' in the Heritage Assessment. To me, Devon House next door in Hay Street is a high rise Art Deco office building from 1938.
