The Killer Whale Museum in Eden opened in 1931 although this building dates from 1938. It's still going strong and by all accounts, the skeleton of the killer whale, "Old Tom", is still a very popular exhibit.References:

I haven't seen the location of the Eden building, or have forgotten it, if I have been there. But doesn't it remind you of the beach pavilions, for changing your bathers and for drinking coffee? There is something very beachy about small, white or cream buildings that were built in understated Deco taste.
ReplyDeleteHels, it is set at the end of the main shopping strip on a hill overlooking the bay. I agree it is very seasidey. There's a photo of the building in 1938 on the museum website that shows it was originally brick (probably cream coloured) and has been rendered and painted white later on.
DeleteIs that the anchor from the Graf Spee in the top photo?
ReplyDeleteWas surprised to see that it had been a museum for all that time - thought it was originally a post-office, but I guess they should know!
I didn't notice a plaque on the anchor ... so Yes it could be :-)
DeleteThe museum pre-dates the building and it isn't clear from their website whether the building was purpose-built for the museum or they inherited it at a later time.
