I took this photo of the The Tivoli in Christchurch in September 2006. It doesn't look the best, especially at ground level and in fact it was demolished in 2007.
In 1915 Everbody's Theatre opened on this site in Cathedral Square. It was remodelled in Art Deco style in 1934 by Cecil Wood with input from Paul Pascoe. This is when it took on the Tivoli name. From the 1970s it was known as the Westend Theatre but the Tivoli name remained intact under alterations dating from that time but it remerged after some TLC to shine brightly for the final few years of the old theatre's life.

So sad that it's been demolished. I like the colour scheme.
ReplyDeleteThey did a great job on the façade for those final few years.
DeleteOh well, maybe it would fallen down in the earthquake, but it is sad that it was demolished. The paintwork is really good.
ReplyDeleteFrom a heritage point of view It just seems so much worse when we demolish buildings.
