This is the Temple Emanu-El, the synagogue for Miami South Beach. It dates from 1947 and was designed by Albert Anis & Charles Greco.

I would have thought that 1947 was quite late for Deco, yet they seemed to have simply extended Miami's beach side taste for deco homes, flats and hotels into community facilities. It would have been quite stark, but the columns and lace work break up the facade beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI agree Helen, quite late for Art Deco but I suppose that being the dominate style in Miami South Beach it prevailed longer here than is other places.
ReplyDeleteThe MDPL guide notes that the interior is significant and you can get a glimpse inside on the Temple's website.

ReplyDeleteAustere and heavy on the outside; over-the-top Moorish Revival style on the inside. The Moorish style certainly lent itself to synagogue building across the world, but it comes as a bit of a surprise in Miami (given the exterior).
