former Commonwealth Bank, Balaclava

Ilona Staller, BalaclavaThis fabulous building in Carlisle Street, Balaclava is a former branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. I remember it in recent times as a take-away chicken joint but last year it was remodelled as a restaurant/bar, Ilona Staller, by Grant Amon Architects bringing a contemporary Art Deco interpretation to the old Art Deco bank.

  1. Full points to the owners for giving this one a new life, despite the fairly forgettable new interior. A little too funky for my tastes.
It looks pretty tragic on Google street view.

    1. I agree Wayne. Good on them for making it look so good. I haven't been inside so I don't know how the photos compare to the real thing but you are so right about how it looks in Google street view. I remember it looking a bit better than that but not much better.

For anyone who is curious check it out
