Niagara Cafe, Gundagai

Niagara Cafe, Gundagai

I hope you saw my post the other day showing some the Art Deco features inside the Niagara Cafe in Gundagai. Well, this is what the outside of the building looks like. Very good a street level, if you can ignore the small blue tiles at the foot of the building.

The façade above the verandah could be sensational but needs a bit of work. A lick of paint would improve it immensely.

But I'm sure you'll agree this set of three curved windows stepping into the doorway are brilliant.

  1. Just gorgeous! Who would have thought to find such a gem in a small country town. Will have to stop by if I'm ever driving through!

  2. The three curved windows seem very exotic and posh even now. I wonder if the glass technology was readily available back then or if they had to import a fancy new technology from the big smoke.

    1. You ask the most interesting questions Helen. I'd imagine either is possible. They may have wanted to import the latest to make the cafe stand apart as the most modern in town.

  3. That is just a stunning building David. As part of my major photographic project documenting Australian Art Deco, I remember this building well, but hadn't realised that the interior was even more lavish! Just goes to show, explore buildings inside and out as you never know what might find! It's one amazing interior!!!

    1. You know what it is like though Thomas. There are so many buildings to see that you can't go into them all. Luckily we were stopping for lunch so I had plenty of time to look around.
