I found this house in Bairnsdale on our drive through East Gippsland yesterday.
I like the screen doors at the front.
Did you notice the message of
Merry Christmas and the helpful addition of a few arrows in black texta to indicate where the bell is.
And the handwritten note attached to the door using a clothes peg.
But my favourite feature of the house is the chimney.
The doors are nice, but spoilt. The chimney is ok, but the house, well I don't like to be too negative. What the heck. Art Deco on the cheap.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a charming little house. Not a lot of decoration. Exposed brick bands on the column at the porch and on the side of the chimney. The same brick is then used at the top of the chimney. Not sure how the doors have been spoilt. It probably is Art Deco on the cheap. Deco was an all encompassing style from cheap crockery people could by in Woolies to the grandest buildings and ocean liners. This is just a modest house showing some deco elements.
DeleteThese kind of Modernist homes were built on a large scale in many Australian towns and cities and they form part of the collective architectural and social history. Nice collection of images David, highlighting the interesting features of the home.
ReplyDeleteThanks Thomas.
