This is the former Apollo Theatre in Macau, near Senado Square. It dates from 1935, the first film shown was The Merry Widow on 2nd Feb 1935 and, by design, it had shops and apartments at the front and an auditorium on the ground floor at the rear. The Apollo name can still be seen on the corner of the building near the Esprit ad.Reference:

Beautiful. Love that green colour.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think they chose well.
DeleteWhat an attractive building! But there is nothing about this building that screams "theatre", at least from what we can see. So when they built shops and flats into the front of the building, right from the beginning in 1935, was it meant to disguise the main purpose of the building. Perhaps the tenants didn't want theatre customers mooching around, before and after the programme.
ReplyDeleteGood questions Helen. I'm not sure what the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne looked like before it was remodelled in the 60s or 70s but it doesn't look like a theatre either.
