Look up for inspiration and beauty
In Melbourne Art Deco, Robin Grow, President of the Art Deco & Modernism Society, examines the rise, fall and resurgence of Art Deco in Melbourne from the 1930s to the present day. With contemporary images by David Thompson and a team of photographers, supported by archival material, Melbourne Art Deco offers an invaluable insight into history and current state of one of the city's most popular styles.
May the developers rot in architectural hell for eternity :(
ReplyDeleteWhy must the world be so cruel?!?!
ReplyDeleteThis is sad. :( Does Melbourne not have a landmark preservation commission? If not, they should now. NYC's famous Beax Arts masterpiece Penn Station's demolition created NY's LPC.
ReplyDeleteWe do have Heritage Victoria that list buildings at a State level but they didn't consider Lonsdale House was of State significance. It was 'protected' by being part of a City of Melbourne heritage area but the City Council did not fight for it when the State planning Minister, Justin Madden, excluded it from that protection to allow for the demolition.
ReplyDeleteYou can read more about this sad saga on some of my other Londale House posts.

Totally depressing
ReplyDeleteI wonder if anyone was able to salvage the wonderful features such as the 'Lonsdale House' typeface and the turret? Or did thy all just go in the bin?
ReplyDeleteI haven't about anything being salvaged. It would be nice but I think unlikely.
