There are no prizes for guessing that this building, The Edith Centre, is in Blackpool. The tower is a bit of a giveaway. And I suppose that no-one will be surprised to learn that the Edith Centre now houses a modern chain. A fast food chain at that, McDonald's no less.
But high on the building, either side of the clock there are these wonderful series of stone seagulls.
I am glad this Deco building survived in Blackpool, even if it is covered in the dreaded Mackers's advertising. The amazing Blackpool Lido, built in a very similar period (1923), was replaced by something that lacks the monumentality of the the original.
ReplyDeleteI know Hels but better they become Golden Arches than be demolished.
ReplyDeleteBlackpool has some really wonderful buildings. But a lot of them are hidden in back streets or by modern fascias. As Hels said the lido was a great building but is sadly gone. Hopefully now the Council own the Winter Gardens and the Tower they will make the most of the buildings and maintain them properly so we dont loose them.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too. There is no doubt that proper maintenance, conservation and use of older buildings can aid everything from tourism to community pride.
